Eastham MA is known as the gate to the Cape Cod National Seashore. It was founded in 1961 by President Kennedy to protect Cape Cod’s coast from erosion and overpopulation. Actually, about 1/3 of the town is located within the national seashore.
Eastham has many beaches, both on the Atlantic and bay sides and is a popular tourist destination on Cape Cod. In addition to beaches, there are several freshwater ponds near the center of town, including Great Pond, which has two public beaches.
Eastham houses a number of sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Eastham Windmill which is the oldest windmill on Cape Cod. There are three museums: the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum, the 1741 Swift-Daley House, the Antique Tool Museum and the Gill Beach Shack. The museums are opened in July and August.
